By now, you must know the importance of using a mailing list to communicate directly with your readers and turn them into customers. But does the thought of creating a free download or sales funnel for your blog bore you to tears? Here’s a simpel guide for how to grow your email list with a quiz.
I struggled for years to create a solid email marketing strategy because I hated the thought of creating just another boring e-book. To me there was nothing more painful than preparing a document, uploading that document to my email list provider, and then telling my readers to download said document.
Well, friend, I found a better way to grow your email list… and it’s actually kind of fun! ๐ That’s coming from someone who never thought she’d see the words “fun” and “email list” in the same sentence. Let’s get into it.
Meet Interact* Quiz Builder
Interact* is an online quiz building software that seamlessly integrates with dozens of email list providers. The result is quizzes that easily to sync with ConvertKit, Mailchimp, MailerLite and more. Their software interface is clean, easy to navigate, and beginner friendly.
Plus, you don’t have to know code to share it (score!). Interact has thousands templates to choose from a variety of different niches. Let’s be honest, you can’t go wrong with pre-made quizzes. Who even has time to design from scratch? Oh wait… ๐โโ๏ธ
There’s no question as to why this software has been trusted by industry leaders such as Jenna Kutcher, Lewis Howes, and Kayla Hollatz.
So, what’s the deal with quizzes?
If you’ve ever visited Buzzfeed, you’ll know how addictive personality quizzes can be. I mean, they’ve built their whole brand around quizzes. It’s not like anyone really needs to know what kind of bread they are (marble rye) or what Disney prince they’d marry (Prince Eric, duh). But somehow getting these results feels good – they serve our psychological need for acceptance, identity and belonging.
Creating a quiz is not only a great way to grow your email list; it’s also a way to connect with your audience and subscribers in an engaging way. When you know about who your reader is beyond just the superficial, you can make smarter choices about how to speak to them, and ultimately, convert them into a customer.
Not convinced? Here’s a blog post* all about why quizzes are the next big thing in marketing.
How to create your first quiz
1. Sign up for Interact*.
Anyone can use their software for free, but if you want to use your quiz a lead generator to grow your email list, you’ll have to choose from one of their paid plans. It’s beyond worth it, too, because each person who takes your quiz can potentially turn into a paying customer.
2. Create a new quiz.
Once you’re logged into your dashboard, you can create a new quiz. You can then decide if you want to start with a template or from scratch.
Pro tip:ย I suggest using a template for your first quiz. Once you’re familiar with how the software works, you can reverse engineer a template to suit your brand. Ain’t no shame in using a template! This is coming from a custom website designer, too ๐
3. Choose your category or industry.
Next, select your industry or chosen topic(s). Interact* has templates for all of their featured categories, and you’ll find that there’s something for almost everyone. For travel bloggers, you can scroll to the bottom and select travel. You also have the option to select multiple topics, or even all of them! Can’t go wrong with variety ๐
4. Select the quiz type you’ll be creating.
Once you’ve selected your topic(s), you can decide what type of quiz you want to create. Interact* has three options for quizzes: assessment (testing knowledge), personality (learning about yourself) and scored (ranking questions with different score amounts). I chose to create a personality quiz but you can choose any option you like.
5. Select a quiz template.
Here’s where the real fun starts! You can see live examples of quizzes in your category and type, which makes the whole process simple and headache-free. You can even sort them by conversion rate, which will show the highest-converting quizzes first. The templates include stock photos, quiz questions and quiz results, with the option of taking full control of every one of these aspects.
Pro tip:ย start with a template and only make changes to what’s necessary, like your questions, brand colours, and photos.
6. Enter your questions and results.
Okay, so this step can take a bit longer depending on how organized you are. Before entering or changing your quiz questions, you should have at least an idea of what you want to ask or give your quizzers. Once I got to this step, I saved my quiz as a draft and mapped out my whole quiz in a Google Sheets spreadsheet, but you can totally plan your quiz right in the quiz builder.
Pro tip: don’t forget to map your quiz questions to their results (that’s how the quiz knows who gets what).
7. Sync to your email list provider.
Now that your quiz is ready, you can sync to your email list provider. I use MailerLite and it was super simple; here’s a blog post to help if you’re also on MailerLite. Integrating with your mailing list is as easy as pressing just a few buttons. If you get stuck at all, their blog has some great resources for how to sync your quiz.
Pro tip: enable the GDPR checkbox! This has been a lifesaver for me since I had no clue how I’d make my quiz GDPR compliant. Good news, Interact did it for me. When a quizzer gets to the result page, they will have the option of signing up to your mailing list and consenting to receive ongoing emails from you beyond just the quiz results. Score!
8. Publish and embed your quiz.
Yay! Your quiz is done and you’re ready to share it with the world ๐ Embedding couldn’t be easier – there are options for adding an announcement bar, creating a popup, and even setting up a Facebook Ad with your quiz. Oh, and if you have WordPress (which you should), there’s even a super easy-to-use plugin that makes the process even simpler.
